Can you believe it? 1989 was really the miracle year, the annus mirabilis in European history when things that nobody would believe they could possibly see in their lifetime actually happened.Įrnest Bevin, the great British Foreign Secretary and one of the founding fathers of NATO back in the 50s, once said that his foreign policy was to go down to Victoria Station in London, buy a ticket and go anywhere that he chose. The final one will be on Thursday when we look at Yugoslavia and how NATO used force for the first time in its history in the mid-1990s and the consequences for what NATO is doing today in Afghanistan. In fact this week you’re very lucky – you’re getting two lectures not just one.
